The Winchester Model 1897 is a pump-action shotgun with an external hammer and tube magazine made by the Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation. It is sometimes referred to as the Model 97, M97, or Trench Gun. The Winchester Model 1893 by John Browning evolved into the Model 1897. Around a million of these shotguns were made between 1897 and 1957. The Model 1897 was available with a solid frame or takedown, in a variety of barrel lengths and grades, and in 12 and 16 gauge. The normal barrel length for 16-gauge firearms was 28 inches, whereas 30-inch barrels were provided for 12-gauge guns. Orders for special length barrels might be placed for lengths up to 36 inches long and as short as 20 inches.
