From 1963 to 1985, Walther produced a line of machine pistols in the 9mm–19mm Parabellum caliber in West Germany under the name MP (Maschinenpistole).

Walther started creating submachine guns in the late 1950s in accordance with West German plans for re-arming the military and police. Mass production of this novel submachine gun—later known as the Walther MPL/K—started in 1963.

When it was first made available, West German intelligence services and US military special forces in Germany, such the 39th Special Forces Detachment, adopted it.
