The Type 97 heavy tank machine gun, also known as the Ky-nana-shiki shasai j-kikanj, was the Imperial Japanese Army’s main machine gun for use in tanks and armored vehicles during World War II. This weapon had nothing to do with either the Type 97 automatic cannon employed as an anti-tank rifle or the Type 97 aviation machine gun used in a number of Japanese Navy aircraft, including the Mitsubushi A6M Zero.
