Hugo Schmeisser created the German assault rifle known as the StG 44 during World War II. Sturmgewehr 44 is the full name of the weapon. It is also known by the MP 43 and MP 44, which were its initial designations (Maschinenpistole 43 and 44). The Maschinenkarabiner 42 was a previous design that was improved with the StG 44. (H).
With features like an intermediate cartridge, regulated automatic fire, a more compact construction than a battle rifle with a higher rate of fire, and being primarily designed for hitting targets within a few hundred meters, the StG 44 was the first successful assault rifle.
