The SKS is a semi-automatic rifle created by Soviet small weapons designer Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov in 1945. Its full name is Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova, which translates to Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova in romanization.
The SKS was initially created in the Soviet Union, although it was later widely exported and produced by many different countries. Its distinctive features include a fixed, hinged magazine and a permanently connected, folding bayonet. The SKS was rendered obsolete in the Soviet Armed Forces in the 1950s when the AK-47 was introduced because it lacked select-fire capability and had a ten-round magazine. But for decades, SKS carbines were still in use with the Soviet Border Troops, Internal Troops, and second- and reserve-line army formations.
