Georgy Shpagin created the PPSh-41, a Soviet submachine gun, as a less complex and expensive replacement for the PPD-40. The weapon’s frequent nickname in Russian is “papasha,” which translates to “daddy.” Due to its rapid fire rate, it was also sometimes referred to as the “burp gun.”

The PPSh is a selective-fire submachine gun with a magazine feed that uses an open bolt blowback operation. Made largely of stamped steel, it can be loaded with either a box or drum magazine and fires the 7.62×25mm Tokarev pistol round.
