The German firearms maker Mauser initially produced the Mauser C96 (Construktion 96) between 1896 and 1937. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, the rifle was also produced in China and Spain under unauthorized licenses.

The integral box magazine in front of the trigger, the long barrel, the wooden shoulder stock that gives it the steadiness of a short-barreled rifle and functions as a holster or carrying case, and a grip like a broom handle are the C96’s distinguishing features. In the English-speaking world, the gun’s grip got it the moniker “broomhandle,” and in China, the C96’s rectangular internal magazine and other features gave it the moniker “box cannon” (Chinese: ; pinyin: hézipào).
