During the latter stages of World War II, the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS made considerable use of the German general-purpose recoil-operated air-cooled machine gun known as the MG 42 (short for Maschinengewehr 42). It started production in 1942 with the intention of supplanting and displacing the older MG 34, which cost more and took longer to construct, although both weapons continued to be made until the end of World War II.
The MG 42 proven to be incredibly dependable and simple to use. It was created to employ the common German 7.9257mm Mauser rifle round, be inexpensive, and be easier to mass-produce. It is mainly known for having a cyclic rate that is incredibly high for a weapon employing full-power service cartridges, averaging around 1,200 rounds per minute
