In the early 1980s, when the comparative tests of the V-80 (Ka-50 prototype) and the Mi-28 were in progress, Kamov’s team decided to create a helicopter dedicated to field reconnaissance, target designation, support and coordinates the Ka-60-based combat helicopter mission. However, the economic difficulties that hit the country in the late 1980s prevented this new development plan. This prompted the general designer Kamov to choose a modified version of the Ka-50 to include the tracking system in the nameplate. The modified “Black Shark” requires a second crew member to operate the optronic/radar research lab. Kamov decided to use a side-by-side seating arrangement, because of the guaranteed improvement in the cooperation of the workers. This two-seat model was designated Ka-52.
